There have been times in my teaching career that I didn't absolutely love it, but you know what? I'm the only one with the power to change what I'm doing! Keep being positive and keep doing what you're doing! I'll be back to keep reading!
By the way have you heard about Elmer's Bag It Forward Challenge? Check it out here: http://tinyurl.com/24hldur

Amen. I think it's too easy to think that the only way to teach is to actually be employed by a school district. Both of you obviously have passion to teach, but the situations and circumstances you found yourselves in were beyond your control.
I didn't mean to sound as though I were discounting these kinds of things. But too often we see teachers leave formal education and run to something completely unrelated. I see this blog as an extension of my teaching life. In fact, it's a completely different kind of teaching, but it's no less valid than my time that I spend in front of the class.
What I love about your comments is that both of you took an active role in making changes in your world. You didn't give up, you're just shifting gears.

Excellent comments. Here in the UK the drive towards meaningless qualifications is such that I have spent the last 2 years getting 4 gcse equivalents out of EVERY child in school in just 3 hours a week. Very little teaching involved just do this, fill in this template and hand it in. One child I taught this year has a reading age of 6.5 and STILL was passing this course - aided by an LSA who was typing all his work for him! What will he learn? How will he value his education? I feel I could have done so much better TEACHING him for 2 years and letting him slowly work towards 1 gcse that he would value as something he'd earned. The least bright kids in our all inclusive comprehensive school are leaving with 10 GCSE's grade C and above, in just 3 subjects! I love teaching and that's what I'm going to put myself out there to do now. Training courses, masterclasses and some educational clubs for those with learning needs.

I just quit my "teaching" job. After 18 years in EBDland in 7 different districts in two different states, it is time to shift from direct service to teaching teachers in training at my local university. Teaching is just about as difficult as parenting. It is just as rewarding as parenting. It is just as heart wrenching, frustrating, grueling and joyous. But it is getting harder. It is starting to make less and less sense and I think what many are feeling is less and less control of how they teach which then makes the the whole gig less satisfying and gratifying.
I love, love, love what I did for 18 years. I know what I am doing. I am a master at it. But it is now time to pass the baton and I hope I can do it in such a way that keeps the good ones in education for the long haul.
What those of us who blog can do is to validate, offer solutions and keep the passion alive.
