I think we have a special obligation as teachers to be healthy and happy individuals. I've started a blog on that very topic. Your honesty is powerful!

As in life, golf requires one to trust ones swing and let the other guy (partner? God?) watch where your ball goes. Yeah a little deep here, but the parallels continue to amaze me.

It sounds like you got to experience a lot of things which may have filled a need at the time but now it is time to move on to other things (which actually may include doing less things). Many times I see parents overload their children with too many activities and I wonder how quickly the child will burn out. I'm glad you realized this before it started to affect your health (which can also happen.). Sounds like you have a well thought out plan and are working to make it happen.

I think it is wonderful that you had so many great opportunities. There are so many interesting and fun and talent-using things to do and certain personalities can manage multiple activities so well. But, there is a need for reflection in the teaching profession and if sufficient space isn't allowed for it, not-so-nice things happen. I learned this the hard way when I worked summer daycare last summer until a week before school started. N-e-v-e-r again. I burned out. Bad year. This summer, I did NOTHING in June, but think and play on the net. I realized just past mid-month that I was actually able to think of next year's group and challenges with anticipation. I'm taking 2 four-week courses this month and I'm ready to go to my room and do some work toward next year. The difference is night and day between these 2 summers. Don't know why I didn't catch a clue before. All the research and masters coursework I've done points toward reflection as a best practice.
I like your phrase 'allocation of attention' -puts a new light on time management. Congrats on finding the truth for your situation and best wishes implementing your discoveries. Sorry to run off at the fingers, but had to say I know what you mean.

Wow – Sounds like you’ve managed to get some deep reflection squeezed in there in the midst of your constant running this summer. I hope that you can increase the time for the things that matter most, and whittle away the less important.

I appreciate your honesty in this post, Joel.
