An “Online Magazine Rack”

I recently got an email from Guy Kawasaki, the noted Apple evangelist. He writes:

Yesterday we announced a website that is a collection of “single-page
aggregations” organized by topics such as Fashion, Celebrities, Sports,
Gaming, Macintosh, Science, Green, and Autos.

Here people can find odd news from dozens of sites, side-by-side, at a
glance–think of it as an “online magazine rack.” I hope that you will like
it and will spread the word.

I’m not exactly sure how So You Want To Teach? ended up in the list, but Alltop recently added an education category. Somehow, they have decided to include this blog in their list of 75 or so. Somehow somebody somewhere decided that my writing is among the top education sites on the web. How cool is that?

But wait, you say. What is Alltop anyway? Their website tells us:

We help you explore your passions by collecting stories from “all the top” sites on the web. We’ve grouped these collections — ”aggregations” — into individual Alltop sites based on topics such as environment, photography, science, celebrity gossip, fashion, gaming, sports, politics, automobiles, and Macintosh. At each Alltop site, we display the latest five stories from thirty or more sites on a single page — we call this “single-page aggregation.”

You can think of an Alltop site as a “dashboard,” “table of contents,” or even a “digital magazine rack” of the Internet. To be clear, Alltop sites are starting points — they are not destinations per se. The bottom line is that we are trying to enhance your online reading by both displaying stories from the sites that you’re already visiting and helping you discover sites that you didn’t know existed. In this way, our goal is the “cessation of Internet stagnation.”

Cool stuff. And I’m still amazed that this little blog that I started a little over a year ago is included. This is a result of my great readers! Thank you so much.

Speaking of my great readers, we are now averaging over 200 readers, and the projections seem to indicate we will be at somewhere over 300 by the August; maybe as soon as June! You people rock! Keep sending friends this way and linking to SYWTT.

Other sites on the list include:

In other news, Mister Teacher and Dick Vitale have posted their own “online magazine stand” over at Learn Me Good. The 162nd Carnival of Education “March Mathness Edition” is up and running. I like how he added my site at the very bottom of the list. That may be because of all the things I wrote about Mister Teacher on the wall in the bathroom stall…

Joel Wagner (@sywtt) began teaching band in 2002. Though he had a lot of information, his classes were out of control. He found himself tired, frustrated, disrespected by students, lonely, and on the brink of quitting. He had had enough. He resigned from his school district right before spring break of his second year and made it his personal mission to learn to be a great teacher. So You Want To Teach? is the ongoing story of that quest for educational excellence.

  3. Mad props, Joel, for making the list. Two of my favorite blogs – yours and Doug Noon’s Borderland – made the list. Although I don’t quite get the concept of Kawasaki’s concept, he apparently appreciates what it is you are doing.:)
