Exploring EduBlogs

1207518_antique_world_mapAs my series of 10 Things I Wish I Knew As A First Year Teacher comes to a close, I want to point out that the world has changed dramatically over the last 7 years since I began teaching. As an educator, the primary advantage in the tremendous growth of the Internet would be the incredible EduBlogs that have sprung up.

As someone who is quite technologically sophisticated, the presence of this many blogs would have been tremendously helpful for me back then. The problem is that most of the people out there aren’t quite as technologically saavy as I am. So what is an aspiring young educator to do?

I’ve been thinking about this quite a bit. Honestly, there are some blogs out there that simply bore me to tears, and there are some that entertain me but provide little, if any, valueable services.

I would, however, like to explore a handful of these really great blogs out there and feature them in the near future on So You Want To Teach?

To that end, I am going to conclude this series, and actually begin a couple of different series’ over the next month or two. First of all, weekdays will be spent looking at some of these great EduBlogs out there. Weekends will be spent going through my email inbox and sending you to some of the resources that my readers have pointed me to. Plus, I will occasionally just write normal blog articles from time to time as well.

After almost three months of silence, I resurfaced with daily blog posts. Now, I’m going to go back to posting regularly, but not necessarily every day. It makes life easier for me.

Enough about me, leave some comments with some of your favorite EduBlogs (advertise your own if you like), and we’ll use the comments to this article as a sort of index of some of the great EduBlogs out there.

Joel Wagner (@sywtt) began teaching band in 2002. Though he had a lot of information, his classes were out of control. He found himself tired, frustrated, disrespected by students, lonely, and on the brink of quitting. He had had enough. He resigned from his school district right before spring break of his second year and made it his personal mission to learn to be a great teacher. So You Want To Teach? is the ongoing story of that quest for educational excellence.

  1. I’m a brand new teacher, and a brand new blogger with edublogs – and already I’ve received comments, advice, and support from people I don’t even know! It’s wonderful to have this other layer of resource to call upon. I love reading other teachers’ blogs and learning new techniques, reading about their stories – it’s like a little PD every day!

  2. @Alexandra – I love your comment about it being like a little PD every day. Based on this year’s slate of PD, I would hope blogging was much better for you than that, but I get where you’re going! :)

@Mister Teacher – Don’t worry. At least it does provide entertainment. Sometimes that’s all I need…

@Todd – I know I have seen a few blogs by substitute teachers out there. Betty has recently begun substituting, if I’m not mistaken.

  3. Your blog rocks! I had a really tough year last year, and your tips on reducing stress were incredibly helpful. I don’t have any other blog recommendations, but I really enjoy yours.
