Welcome to So You Want To Teach? (“we,” “us,” or “our”). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, share, and secure your personal information when you visit https://www.soyouwanttoteach.com (the “Site”), and describes your rights under applicable laws (e.g. CCPA, GDPR).

1. Who We Are

Our website address is: https://www.soyouwanttoteach.com.

2. Information We Collect

a. Personal Data You Provide
– Comments & Contact Forms: name, email address, and any content you submit.
– Email Sign-Ups (coming soon): name and email address for our free crash-course sequence.

b. Automatically Collected Data
– Analytics & Advertising: Google Analytics, Google AdSense cookies, and similar technologies to measure Site performance and serve ads.
– Log Data: IP address, browser type, pages visited, referral URLs, and timestamps via our server logs and analytics.

3. How We Use Your Information

  • Operate & Improve the Site: understand traffic patterns, detect errors, and enhance user experience.
  • Communications: send periodic emails (e.g. crash-course, newsletters) once you opt in.
  • Comments Moderation: verify and publish (or remove) comments you submit.
  • Advertising: display contextually relevant ads via Google AdSense.

4. Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site, we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help with spam detection.

An anonymized string (hash) created from your email address may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar privacy policy is here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

5. Media

If you upload images to the website, avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Visitors can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

6. Cookies & Tracking

We use cookies and similar technologies to:

  1. Remember your preferences (e.g. language, theme).
  2. Analyze Site traffic (Google Analytics).
  3. Serve ads (Google AdSense, DoubleClick).

If you leave a comment, you may opt in to saving your name, email address, and website in cookies for your convenience (lasting one year). When you visit our login page, we set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we set cookies to save your login information and screen display choices (login cookies last two days; screen options cookies last one year). If you select “Remember Me,” your login persists for two weeks. Logging out removes these cookies. Editing or publishing an article saves an additional cookie (no personal data) indicating the post ID; it expires after one day.

Cookie Consent: We recommend re-enabling a lightweight consent banner (e.g. CookieYes or Complianz) to allow visitors to opt in/out of non-essential cookies.

7. Embedded Content from Other Websites

Articles may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles). Embedded content behaves as if the visitor has visited the other website, which may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction.

8. Third-Party Services

We partner with:

  • Google Analytics & AdSense (data processing under Google’s Privacy Policy).
  • WordPress.com (hosting) and Wordfence (security).

We do not share PII with affiliate networks or social widgets.

9. Who We Share Your Data With

If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email. Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

10. Data Retention

If you leave a comment, it and its metadata are retained indefinitely to recognize and approve follow-up comments automatically. For registered users, we store the personal information provided in their profile; users can view, edit, or delete their data (except username). Administrators can also view/edit this information.

Analytics data is aggregated and retained per Google’s default retention settings (14 months).

11. Your Rights

If you are a California (CCPA) or EU/UK (GDPR) resident, you may request:

  • Access to your personal data.
  • Correction of inaccurate data.
  • Deletion of your data (subject to legal exceptions).
  • Opt-out of sale/sharing of personal data (we do not sell data).
  • Data portability, where applicable.

To exercise these rights, email joel@soyouwanttoteach.com with “Privacy Request” in the subject line.

12. Security

We implement industry-standard measures, including SSL/TLS encryption and the Wordfence firewall plugin, to protect your data. No system is 100% secure; notify us immediately of any suspected breach.

13. Children’s Privacy

We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe we have inadvertently done so, please contact us to have that data deleted.
