10 Books That Rocked My World Personal by Joel Wagner - November 7, 2009June 30, 20106 Over the last decade, I have read a handful of great books that forced me to think and consider a lot of things about the way I was living. I've mentioned some of these books before on the blog, but this week I read another one of those kinds of books and thought I would share more with my readers about some of these amazing books. 1999 - How To Win Friends And Influence People (buy on Amazon) Back when I was in college, I didn't know much about social interactions at all. I was horrible with remembering names, I didn't really make much eye contact, and I just sort of needed this book to really open my eyes to
The Adaptive Unconscious: You Never Get A Second Chance To Make A First Impression General by Joel Wagner - November 1, 2009June 30, 20105 Yesterday, I picked up a copy of Malcolm Gladwell's book Blink (purchase on Amazon). Dave Ramsey has been recommending his latest book Outliers (purchase on Amazon) on his radio show lately but when I got to Barnes & Noble, I realized Blink was available in paperback and so was therefore quite a bit less expensive. I've heard Dave recommend it before, so I decided to go with the less costly alternative. I began reading it this afternoon and came across the following paragraph on pages 12-13: Whenever we meet someone for the first time, whenever we interview someone for a job, whenever we react to a new idea, whenever we're faced with making a decision quickly and under stress, we use
Might As Well Face It-I’m Addicted to Blogs! (and listservs and podcasts…) General by Head Monkey - July 23, 2008July 1, 20101 This is a guest post by Tracey, aka The Head Monkey at Middle School Monkeys www.mrsbowes.edublogs.org aka Trixie at TrashyTvTalk at www.trashytvtalk.blogspot.org My apologies to Robert Palmer for stealing his little ditty from the 80's, but it seemed so appropriate! (I refuse to dress like the zombies in the video, though.) Now that school is out and I have waaaay more free time, I really thought I would be a "good wife/mother" and dedicate myself to domestic responsibilities. Well, the jury is still out, but I'm pretty sure I lost the "Mother of the Year Award" already and Better Homes and Garden is not returning my calls for the 4 page spread. I hired a cleaning lady to do the spring cleaning I never did and my
10 Things To Do While Joel Is Gone General by Mister Teacher - July 23, 2008July 1, 20100 This is a guest post by Mister Teacher of Learn Me Good. Hello everybody! Since Joel made this forum available, I thought I'd jump on board while the iron is hot (not to mix metaphors or anything). Also, since Joel's vacation and mine (leaving at the butt-crack of dawn tomorrow morning for Comic-Con in San Diego) pretty nearly coincide, I figured I should do it sooner than later! For anyone who doesn't know me, I am Doctor Teacher. (Of course, everyone who DOES know me, knows full well that I am not a doctor.) I run a quaint little site called Learn Me Good, which you are all certainly more than welcome to check out, subscribe to, and idolize. Per
The State of the Blog: 08/01/07 Blogging & Technology by Joel Wagner - August 1, 2007July 5, 201011 I took out nearly every advertisement from the site. The exception are links to books on Amazon, and a couple of Text Link Ads. Why? They're simply not making money and they cause screen clutter. So away they go. I additionally got rid of the SnapPreview display that had been popping up every time a user hovered the mouse over an external link. It's extra CPU time and can be annoying quickly. It's great to know how to do that kind of stuff, but brilliance is shown by knowing how to do something and choosing to not do it! Blogging guru Lorelle also left me a comment advising me against it and I trust she knows a little bit about
The Dip Inspiration by Joel Wagner - May 27, 2007July 5, 20100 It came in the mail on Friday. I read it on Saturday. This was my first opportunity to read a book by Seth Godin, and I sure was not disappointed. "The Dip: A Little Book That Teaches You When To Quit (And When To Stick)" and that's exactly what it is. Although Mr. Godin is primarily an internet marketing guru, the book can easily be applied to anything we do in life. Anything from relationships to business to where you are teaching to even overall career choice -- it's covered here. The book is broad in scope, and can be applied to any and all of these areas. At 76 pages (and not very tall pages at that), this baby
